MP3/Ogg Player
Although virtually all MP3 players do not list Linux (or MacOS) compatibility, I'm sure that the vast majority are simple UMS devices that are just as compatible as they are with windows.
Anyway, I just bought such a device from Cowon (iAudio F2), which not only is Linux compatible, but it actually worked better on my Linux box that it did with Windoze! Plug it into Linux box... hey presto... detected USB media device... and what would you like to do? Plug it into Windoze... up pop the usual balloon bubble things in the corner hinting that it might have detected a new device... and then one more saying that there was a problem installing new device, and that the device may not work correctly! Funny that!
Out of the box, it supports not only MP3, but also Ogg and FLAC :) as well as some WMA thing. Also supports video, text, has in built FM radio. By default it is set to UMS, rather than MTP, unlike most other players that you need to change the setting and reboot, or press some odd key combo when powering on to force a change. Also no functionality is lost in UMS mode (apart from probably DRM, but I refuse to go anywhere near DRM). All file management is via ID3 tags, and no poncy database to sync.
The downsides? So far, I've not worked out how to change the recording (voice, FM or Line In) from WMA to a real format, but then Amarok (just the 1st player I tried) quite happily played it back
and should be easy to transcode to something useful. The other downside is that the thing is so small that it is very difficult to feel the buttons which are flush with the screen. It would be nice to have a textured middle button, so that it can be operated blind more easily.
